From Corporate to Creative: Nancy Dillingham Marks on Finding Passion and Building Community

In this inspiring episode of the Pockets of Knowledge podcast, host Desiree Stanley speaks with Nancy Dillingham Marks, founder of Glass Arts Collective, about her journey from a structured corporate career to discovering her passion for fused glass art. Nancy shares how her creative spark was ignited by a simple class she attended with her mother, which eventually led to the creation of her own art studio. What began as a personal exploration turned into a thriving space for fostering creativity and connection.

Nancy reflects on the challenges of opening Glass Arts Collective in January 2020, just before the pandemic. She used the downtime to refine her skills, rethink her approach, and lay the foundation for a vibrant community of artists. Her studio has since become a sanctuary where people can explore their creativity, relieve stress, and uncover hidden talents. From hosting classes to running a gift shop featuring unique, handmade pieces, Nancy has created an environment that celebrates individuality and the beauty of imperfection.

The episode emphasizes that creativity can emerge at any stage of life if you’re open to trying new things. Nancy highlights how fused glass art is an approachable medium blending technique with personal expression, and she encourages embracing imperfections in both art and life to uncover unexpected beauty and growth. She also introduces her podcast, The Artistic Exchange, where she will explore the passions and journeys of artists from diverse mediums. For those interested in fused glass or supporting local artists, Nancy shares how to visit her studio in Thousand Oaks, California, or shop her collection of handcrafted pieces online. This episode showcases the transformative power of art, community, and embracing life’s unexpected turns.
